What Is Power Steering Fluid?
Like all fluids in your vehicle, power steering fluid plays an important role in keeping your car operating at peak performance. This fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid which works to transfer power in your steering system, allowing you to turn the steering wheel of your vehicle with ease. It also helps lubricate the power steering pump and the steering components, and even prevents corrosion within the system. Because this fluid serves a variety of different purposes, you can see why it’s so important to make sure your fluid is always at the correct level, and that you change it when it has become worn or dirty.
Why Change Your Power Steering Fluid?
As with all of the other fluids in your vehicle, power steering fluid breaks down over time due to use, heat, cold, contaminants, and other factors. You should make it a habit to check your power steering fluid every time you check your oil level, or about once per month. Many reservoirs are made of clear plastic, which means you don’t even have to take the cap off in order to see if the fluid is at the correct level. Checking the level helps you keep an eye on the level to top it off when necessary. Make sure to consult your manual to determine the correct type of fluid to add, as not all systems use the same type of fluid. Some foriegn or high performance vehicles may need a fluid that has to be special ordered, rather than what is readily available at the auto store.
Another reason to check your power steering fluid level is to alert you of a possible leak in the system. Power steering systems rely on various hoses and seals which can wear out over time and cause leaks. If you’re losing a lot of fluid consistently, chances are you have a leak somewhere. Another way to tell if you’re losing fluid is if your steering wheel is becoming more difficult to turn, or if it makes a whining sound when driving.
How To Tell When My Power Steering Fluid Needs to Be Changed
